CCP Showcases Zamboanga Rappers at Performatura 2017
Jann Altea, aka Binibining Beats and her rap group We Don’t Usually Do This, headlined a show for the Performatura Festival 2017. Ms. Altea performed beatboxing and shared her talent to a full Tanghalang Huseng Batute at 6 pm to 7 pm giving the audience a full hour of beats and songs.
Joining Ms. Altea on stage are her groupmates, Pluma, RKJun, and Turbo Pluma demonstrated his skills at mixing tracks while blending beatboxing. Turbo, a Manileno who moved to Mindanao when he was younger, rapped his original composition about wasted opportunities while RKJun sang in Tausug about his personal and familial struggles.
The rap group exemplified Zamboanga culture, a cultural melting pot of Spanish, Muslim, and Cebuano influences. We Don’t Usually Do This or WUTS as the group calls themselves seemingly expanded the use of their dialects when they rapped in Filipino, Tausug, and Chavacano while also highlighting the ills of their generation.
The show is part of the lineup for Hugot Monologues, a segment in the 3-day festival, which focused on young performers.
