Poetry is Our Second Language Conducts Poetry Workshop at the CCP
Eloisa Toledo Francia, of the Filipino-Canadian poetry group Poetry is Our Second Language, conducted an hour and a half long workshop to a jam-packed audience in the Tanghalang Huseng Batute at the CCP. The workshop, held last March 31, was part of the event line-up for the Performatura Festival 2017.
Throughout the lecture, Ms. Francia deconstructed poetry and shown that its practice of heightening language is part of everyday Filipino life and culture. She then proceeded to engage the audience in a series of poetry exercises and had members of the audience to perform their work on-stage to the delight of their fellow attendees.
Poetry is Our Second Language has been giving their poetry workshop dubbed as Rhyme, Rhythm, and Renaissance: Introduction to Traditional Filipino Storytelling and Spoken Word, to newer generations of Filipino-Canadian poets yearly and to students in the Philippines. The workshop blends Filipino history, Filipino storytelling, and spoken word poetry in order to encourage more youth to express their thoughts and experiences in these art forms.
